LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION

The Booth Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System for the general collection.  Understanding the LC Classification System will help you find materials in the library.

CALL NUMBERS

Every item in the library has a call number to identify it.  Library of Congress call numbers consist of:

Class numbers--one or two letters and a number, sometimes followed by a decimal, a letter, and more numbers.  Example:  HC 167 .A34
Cutter numbers--a letter, either the first letter of the author's last name or the first letter of the title, and one or two numbers.  Example:  T87
