Holly
Winterhalter Adams recently completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at
West Virginia University in ceramics.
During that time of intensive study she made a pilgrimage to
China and studied with master potters in several cities and villages in
the northern part of the country. Inspired
by both the landscape and pottery, this journey has had a profound
influence on her work. Seeing
the pottery made during the Sung Dynasty, considered the Golden Age of
Chinese Ceramics, Adams developed a deep appreciation for the historical
roots of porcelain production and its legacy. Adams’s
functional work is inspired by textures and forms found in nature: a
smooth river rock, a milkweed seedpod, and the full round shapes of
garden vegetables. Porcelain--a
very strong, white, smooth clay--provides a medium in which to make
functional work strong enough for daily use.
These same characteristic make it the perfect material for
creating sensual objects to be enjoyed by the eye and hand. |
