Wimpy's

wpeBE.jpg (15758 bytes)

Wimpy's was built in 1930 by Elkins businessman and democratic political leader, Robert Hedrick.  In 1944, when "Wimpy" Valentine returned from serving in WWII he bought the business from Hedrick.  From then on it was known as Wimpy's.  For all those who remember Wimpy, he too was instrumental in the democratic party.  Over the bar he kept a signed picture of President Kennedy.  The business has served the folks of Elkins from 1944 to 2000 by offering great chili-dogs, cold beers, and a room full of pool tables.

Here are the last owners of "Wimpy's," Jeff (Wimpy's son), Debbie (Jeff's wife) and their daughter.

Sitting at the bar the patrons had a good view of the rail yard and could watch as the trains rolled in.  I am sure many travelers to Elkins found Wimpy's to be a convenient spot to have a beer, meet people, and maybe shoot a game of pool.

Wimpy is shown on the left of this picture.

Here are the pool tables looking toward the back of the building.  I'd like a penny for every dollar that got handed across the felt.

Another shot of the tables looking towards the buildings front.

I'd like a penny for every dollar spent here, too!

It's always an advantage to know the rules before you start playing.

Here's the hallway that led to the apartments upstairs.

Owner Debbie (on the left) is pictured pouring one of their famous ice cold mugs of beer.

A treat in the making.  Wimpy made the best chili around and the tradition continued when his son took over.

There is an certain atmosphere about bars that bring in the clientele.  These fine folks found the atmosphere at Wimpy's to be quite comforting.

The slogan "belly up to the bar" did not start here.  It looks like quite a diversity, but knowing the players it really isn't.  "Hey" to Jerry in the background, barely noticeable behind our Sheriff.

You never know who'll drop in.  In this case it was Maid Silvia and her court.

Knowing how volatile a noontime "Wimpy's gang" can be, Maid Silvia had her escorts. (just kidding)

Here is one of Wimpy's trademarks, a men's room with a glass door.  For some reason it started that way and amazingly ended that way.

As you can see from this picture, a glass door on a men's room brings out the onlookers.  By the way, there was no one using the room at the time.
Wimpy's was purchased by the Davis Trust Company in October, 2000.
