| The Gate House stands
at the entrance to Davis and Elkins College which was once the entrance to the Halliehurst
Estate. The medieval looking structure has greeted many guests to the Estate and, in
later years, college students to Davis and Elkins College. When the Estate was
deeded to the College the Halliehurst grounds-keeper, Richard Berry, was provided lifetime
rights for him and his family to live there. Remodeled in the early 1990's, the
Gate House now serves as a guest house for the college and the community. |
| When you first walk through the front door you are greeted by the warm look of oak paneling. The first photo below shows the entrance view. To the left is the round walled living room (center photo). To the right is the round walled formal dining area (right photo). Straight ahead are the kitchen and back porch. |
| Turning around and looking back at the front door shows the beautifully crafted staircase leading to the second floor (first picture). Upon closer inspection of the staircase you will note the curve (second photo) as the staircase follows the curve of the main tower. Two bedrooms are upstairs (third and fourth photos). |
| Finally, a doorway at the top of the steps on the second floor takes you to the circular stairway of the tower (first photo). Looking through the leaded glass windows of the tower you see a magnificent view of Sycamore Street (second photo). Other windows provide views of the well kept grounds. The final picture shows the Gate House as it looks when guests first arrive down Sycamore Street. |
