The Western Maryland Railroad Station, built in 1908, sits at the intersection of Third Street and Railroad Ave. The building is constructed of red brick and sandstone and when first built it featured a beautiful red terra-cotta tile roof. The railroad utilized the building through the 80's. In the early 90's the Randolph County Development Authority purchased the Station and the adjoining 24 acres that used to comprise the railroad yard. Renovations to the structure are due to begin in summer 2000. |

Here are some pictures of the various offices found in the upstairs of the depot. The Development Authority is planning to refurbish the existing furniture in an effort to maintain the building's unique history. It is interesting to note that the Town of Elkins actually gave a part of two city streets to the railroad to build the depot on. That's why we all zig and zag around the depot while driving down Railroad Avenue and Third Street. The two pictures of city streets were taken from the windows of the Assistant Trainmaster's Office. |
